The old website of Vikrama Simhapuri University was reported to be hacked on Tuesday. It is being said to media that the hackers used this website to cash in lakhs of rupees from students by creating fake email IDs in the name of university officials. University heads said to media that they have lodged a complaint about this issue in local police station in Nellore.
According to the report, Nellore Vikrama Simhapuri University had launched their website www.simhapuriuniv.org back in 2008 which was maintained by a Hyderabad company ICM Spot since then. Later, the website had undergone some major changes back in 2012 and the university had released a new website www.simhapuriuniv.ac.in. The removal of old website was requested to ERNET(Education and Research NET) by the registrars of the university that time. After then, the old website was neglected.
The website was found to be hacked in October 2013 and was not noticed till today. The hacker is reportedly created some fake email IDs and offered 116 variant courses (that the university not actually offer) along with the fee structure. He also provided contact details like already created fake email IDs and phone numbers. Students thought this was real and registered for the courses by paying the fees. Huge amount of Fake certificates were issued to the candidates and the hacker backed lakhs of rupees in his pocket.
The hacker game was running smoothly until one of the students contacted the university personally. Later the university examinations head S. Murali Mohan Reddy have confirmed that the old website was hacked and is being used by a hacker all these days. Later complaint against the hacker was booked in the local one town police station under cyber crime category and investigation is in progress.
“It is found that the hacker had created his ID in Warangal and operating the website from Bangalore and Haryana” said the Inspector of police of one town, Nellore to media.
